The country of Aldrose is an anomaly in the world of Astelle--of all the countries with influence and power in a world of dragons and magic, Aldrose is the only one still in the businesses of slavery and theocracy. The Basilica in Esterose, the heart of all political life, preaches the gospel of the Goddess and her children and has made Fundamental Aldrosean the mandated religion of the country. Their unique vendetta against those they deem "dark mages" is tearing the country in two as easily as ripping a sheet of paper.
Given up to the Basilica not even a day after he was born and raised as a slave-ward of the state, Araven Aldrose is a transgender young man who wears both the color of slavery--light blue--and the robes of a Scorpion. Scorpions are monsters created through dark magic, when a corrupted soul is interred into the body of a teenager in order to create a terrifying and brutal servent of the Basilica. After systematically losing everyone he has ever cared about over the course of his life, Araven has turned to religion for comfort, only to discover that the Goddess the Basilica preaches of is not the one he's found in the books and scriptures. Devout and steadfast in his convictions, he has accepted his eventual death after the end of his usefulness to the Basilica and only rarely entertains the idea that he could ever be anything else.
This section will be updated when The Swan and The Scorpion is completed.
Araven may be short, but he is certainly not small; he is covered head-to-toe with muscle, with thick arms and a chubby stomach and an impressive set of hips that tends to set his boyfriend to staring. He had brown eyes at some point, and his tan skin is covered in dark markings that resemble scars and pulse with a harsh and uncaring power. His hair walks a tight middle line between curly and wavy, often falling over his eyes and looking to be the color of flax. Being openly transgender, he has to balance his physical endurance with the abliity to pass--binding his chest for so long impedes his oxygen intake and restricts movement, making his typical high-impact activity (mainly running and climbing) more difficult.
That being said, Araven has always been an active person. Whether it's looking after the horses of the Basilica or scaling the Atrium dome to get a look at the city surrounding him, he loves to be on the move and adores having the freedom to push his body to his own limits. During his time as a Scorpion, he had a tendency to get in trouble for climbing things he had no business being on. The one good thing to come out of his time as a slave-ward of the state, however, is his devout religious beliefs. Raised in the center of political and religious life, Araven often broke the Basilica rules to study the extended scriptures--versions that had not been cut and pruned and cherry-picked by the Basilica. A belief that had once protected him from the terror of being nothing more than a slave, and eventually an abused child soldier, has now blossomed into something that allows him to help others as much as it helped himself.
